Pennsylvania state legislature votes to impeach progressive Philadelphia District Attorney

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives Wednesday voted to impeach Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. Krasner, a former public defender and member of the progressive prosecutor movement, has faced sharp criticism from Pennsylvania Republicans since his election in 2021.

Approved by the House Judiciary Committee yesterday, articles of impeachment against Krasner passed the full House with 107 votes this afternoon. The articles of impeachment accused Krasner of various “misbehavior” in office, including “dereliction of duty and refusal to enforce the law,” professional ethics violations and “usurpation of legislative function.” Lawmakers especially took issue with Krasner’s refusal to prosecute offenses like “prostitution, theft and drug-related offenses,” and said he created an “atmosphere of lawlessness” in Philadelphia. Krasner’s supporters said he made a decision to turn “low-level, nonviolent crime[s]” into summary offenses with low maximum sentences to “focus limited resources (especially the costs of incarceration) on more significant cases.”

In an October statement, Krasner admitted that “homicides and violent crimes have increased all over the United States, in jurisdictions that have elected both traditional prosecutors and reform prosecutors.” However, he noted that the “increase in the rate of homicide in Philadelphia over 2020-2021 (the most recent full year data) of 59% is much lower that the rates of increase” in other Pennsylvania counties.

According to the New York Times, two Pennsylvania House seats remain uncalled. Democrats currently hold 101 seats, and Republicans hold 100. Krasner’s conviction and removal from office requires a two-thirds majority.
