Prigozhin media group closes following leader’s exile from Russia

Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin’s media company Patriot Media Group announced its closure Saturday in the continuing aftermath of Prigozhin’s brief march towards Moscow, which saw him exiled from Russia. The Moscow Times also reported that the Internet Research Agency, the Russian “troll factory” implicated in the 2016 US election meddling scandal, had shut down as part of Patriot Media Group’s holdings.

The move was announced in a video on RIA FAN, a militant pro-Russia news agency owned and controlled by Prigozhin, by RIA FAN director Yevgeny Zubarev. RIA FAN was added to the EU’s sanctions list along with the Wagner Group back in April 2023, for what the European Council described as “pro-government propaganda and disinformation on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.”

Following Prigozhin’s exile to Belarus, Russian news sites reported that the country’s media watchdog Roskomnadzor had blocked Prigozhin-linked media outlets, which may have precipitated the Patriot Media Group’s collapse.

The media group’s collapse further compounds Prigozhin’s misfortunes following his failed move against the Russian military, which he insisted was not an attempt to overthrow the Russian state. Prigozhin’s Concord catering firm’s multi-billion dollar contract with the Russian military was also annulled on Saturday, and President Vladimir Putin announced that its finances would be investigated following Prigozhin’s apparent mutiny.
