There will likely be ripple effects beyond those law firms. A firm might see Paul Weiss doing a difficult and challenging thing like taking 13 partners from Kirkland and start to think about movement at the top. It inspires other firms to approach the market in a more targeted and proactive way.

Sabina Lippman, co-founder of legal recruiting firm Lippman Jungers, in comments given to the American Lawyer on the potential effects that the back-and-forth lateral partner swipes between Paul Weiss and Kirkland could have on the rest of the Biglaw market. “[T]hese kinds of moves generate excitement and motivate other attorneys to dip their toes in the lateral market,” she said.
