Elite Firm Increases Associate Starting Salaries To $250K

Finally, some happy news.

money stack bonus chart 2022The news out of the legal sector has been nothing but doom and gloom lately, with layoffs and deferrals quickly spreading thanks to headwinds from the still suffering tech industry as corporate demand continues to falter. With plenty of bad news to go around, one boutique firm is taking this as an opportunity to flaunt its generous compensation scheme as it launches an “aggressive” hiring plan.

Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors — the successor firm to Bickel & Brewer — has paid salaries at or above market for years, so of course the firm entered the 2022 associate salary wars and surpassed competitors with a $235,000 salary scale. Now, the firm is back at it, offering entry-level associates an eye-popping $250,000 starting salary.

“The idea is to expand the Dallas office and really push to grow the associate head count,” partner Matthew Davis told Texas Lawyer. “Our intent is to train them and have them stay at the firm through partnership. We plan to be very aggressive in recruiting.” Here are some additional details from Texas Lawyer:

Although the firm will also consider hiring lateral partners, Davis said that the “first order of business is to get our name out there and make it known in the legal market that [the firm] is looking to hire strong associates.”

Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors moved its starting salary from $235,000 to $250,000 for incoming associates to differentiate itself in the market, Davis said.

“It’s our view we want to reset the bar and we believe that makes us the highest in Texas,” he said.

It’s not just first-years who will be handsomely compensated at the firm. Third-year associates reportedly make more than $300,000, while fourth- and fifth-years make more than $400,000.

Congratulations to everyone at the firm. If Brewer wants to increase its head count, offering hefty salaries like these will certainly be helpful.
