Magic Circle Firm Wants To See More Socioeconomic Diversity Within Its Workforce

This Biglaw firm wants to hire more people from working class backgrounds.

We want to be more intentional in our continued search for talent to ensure we bring the best people into our business. The targets we have announced today, together with others we have set in relation to gender and ethnicity, are part of an overall approach to ensure we are reaching the widest possible talent pool.

Steve Cooke, senior partner of Slaughter and May, commenting on the Magic Circle firm’s goal of achieving socioeconomic diversity among its employees. As noted in the firm’s press release, about 18.8% of Slaughter’s employees firmwide, 10% of its attorneys, and 34% of its support staff are considered working class. Slaughter and May would like to increase those figures to 25%, 15%, and 40%. To do so, the firm may widen its recruitment net and offer more apprenticeships.
