Former US ambassador to EU files $1.8M suit over legal fees

US President Donald Trump’s former ambassador to the EU, Gordon Sondland, filed suit against former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the State Department in the District of Columbia on Monday. Sondland is seeking $1.8 million in legal fees, claiming that Pompeo backed out of their previous agreement that had promised the government would cover all costs associated with the House impeachment probe where Sondland testified.

Sondland relayed to the court that he was subpoenaed to testify before Congress and was told that attorneys from the government would not be made available to him. This is when Pompeo “made a legally binding promise, both individually and on behalf of the Government” to reimburse Sondland for whatever attorneys’ fees and costs he may incur.

According to the lawsuit:

After Pompeo learned what Ambassador Sondland’s testimony was before Congress during the 2019 Impeachment Inquiry—words that were entirely candid and truthful (but uncomfortable to the Trump Administration)—Pompeo reneged on his promise. As a result, the Government has withheld reimbursement of Ambassador Sondland’s attorneys’ fees and costs in willful breach of the October 2019 agreement between Pompeo, the Government and Ambassador Sondland.

Testifying for 17 hours before the House Foreign Affairs, Intelligence and Oversight and Reform Committees in 2019, Sondland was a key witness in Trump’s first impeachment proceedings. The impeachment hearings focused on Trump’s attempts to get Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenseky to investigate unconfirmed allegations against then-former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Trump was eventually impeached by the House following this testimony on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, with the Senate later acquitting him. Sondland was fired 48 hours later.

A spokesperson for Pompeo called the lawsuit “ludicrous,” hoping the court will take the same position. In the complaint, Sondland demands repayment of the $1.8 million in attorney’s fees and costs either from the U.S. government or Pompeo himself.
