When a large number of lawyers leave one firm for another, the effects can be far-reaching. A mass lateral raid marked the end of Bingham almost a decade ago. More recently, Stroock was struck by a similar fate. On the flip side, a mass exodus from Lewis Brisbois crashed and burned. Even if the consequences aren’t quite so dramatic (see e.g., Top Biglaw Firms Trade Partner Raids In Rainmaker Battle), the moves are bound to leave an impact.
Above the Law is partnering with a team of researchers at the University of Cincinnati Business School who are studying the mass movements of lawyers between law firms.
Toward that end, we are looking for war stories.
If you have either participated in or witnessed firsthand a mass movement of lawyers from one firm to another — whether it was a group of partners who left together to join another firm or a slow drip of departures from one firm to another — we want to hear from you.
How did the event come about and what were its effects? While we’re interested in the underlying facts — who initiated the move, how the group was formed, why they left, and what was the impact — we’re also eager for any juicy details about the move and its aftermath, among the attorneys themselves as well as the two firms involved.
