Major law firms issue statement denouncing voting restrictions

Dozens of the largest law firms in the US signed on to a statement on Monday denouncing efforts to restrict Americans’ ability to vote.

Leaders of 62 of the nation’s 100 largest law firms added their names to the statement, which called “laws that impose unnecessary obstacles and barriers on the right to vote and that disenfranchise underrepresented groups represent a significant step backwards for all Americans.”

Brad Karp, the chairman of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, spearheaded the effort to unite a coalition of firms to sign the statement. Karp said the coalition will seek to “challenge any election law that would impose unnecessary barriers on the right to vote and that would disenfranchise underrepresented groups in our country.”

Nineteen current and former general counsel for major corporations have also signed the statement, including counsel for Sony, Viacom, Discover and Bristol Myers Squibb. Lucy Fato, general counsel for AIG, who secured the support of the other general counsel, said “I don’t view it as a political issue. I view it as an American issue.”

The statement comes following the passing of a set of restrictive voting laws in Georgia, which have already been challenged in court. While the statement did not mention Georgia, it did “denounce all efforts to restrict the constitutional right of every eligible American to vote and to participate in our democracy.”
