Afghanistan dispatches: ‘The Taliban are proud of the suicide bombers and they will not easily get rid of them.’
JURIST EXCLUSIVE – Law students and lawyers in Afghanistan are filing reports with JURIST on the situation there after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban. Here, a lawyer in Kabul offers his observations and perspective on continuing Taliban efforts to celebrate, recruit and train suicide bombers in Afghanistan. For privacy and security reasons we are withholding our correspondent’s name and institutional affiliation. The text has been only lightly edited to respect the author’s voice.

In a ceremony at a state-owned hotel in Kabul, Sarajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban Minister of Interior, has thanked families of the suicide bombers/attackers. In this gathering, other members of the Haqqani network have also participated. However, Sarajuddin Haqqani’s face was covered during the gathering. The Haqqani network has stated that Sarajuddin Haqqani had covered himself due to security concerns.

Sarajuddin Haqqani is the one for which the US Government announced that anyone who discloses his location and/or provides any information leading to his arrest or death will be awarded with USD $10M. Previously, it was USD $5M but since the Taliban took over the amount went up to USD $10M.

The above gathering has caused much pain for the public and it was discussed on the social media today. In all of the suicide attacks that the Taliban conducted through the past two decades thousands of innocent people have lost their lives and thousands have been wounded.

The Taliban have a special section of the suicide bombers in their military. These people – at the moment – are in Kabul, Mazar, and some other provinces.

What is concerning is that the Taliban still think they should have such military forces in the country. The Taliban are proud of the suicide bombers and they will not easily get rid of them. They provide training and education for men to convince them to become suicide bombers. These training and education are usually done in religious schools called Madrasas. Madrasas are an integral part of the Taliban’s recruitment and usually people with no literacy are selected for such training and education.
