Fear Free Speech: Biden Denounces Big Tech as “Killing People” By Not Censoring Speech

President Joe Biden slammed Big Tech companies this week for “killing people” by failing to engage in even greater censorship of free speech on issues related to the pandemic. It was a surprising condemnation of companies who have been loyal allies of Biden, including killing stories embarrassing to his family like the Hunter Biden laptop scandal before the election. It also has censored stories questioning his victory in 2020. Nevertheless, Biden denounced the range of uncensored free speech as the cause of death for many — the ultimate anti-free speech trope for those seeking to convince people to embrace their own censorship.

Biden was asked by a reporter what his message was to “platforms like Facebook” on the subject of “COVID misinformation.” He responded “They’re killing people. The only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and they’re killing people.”

This comes as these companies have been criticized for censoring debates over the origin or treatment of Covid-19.

For a year, Big Tech has been censoring those who wanted to discuss the origins of pandemic.  It was not until Biden admitted that the virus may have originated in the Wuhan lab that social media suddenly changed its position. Facebook only recently announced that people on its platform will be able to discuss the origins of Covid-19 after censoring any such discussion.

The White House recently admitted that it was flagging “misinformation” for censorship by companies like Facebook. Moreover, White House press secretary Jen Psaki has called for people to be banned from all social media if any one company bans them.

Biden is accusing these companies of actually killing people for refusing even more extensive censorship of speech. The statement equates free speech with death itself.

We have seen this type of reckless rhetoric in other areas where disagreement with a policy or proposal is treated as de facto racism or hate speech. That was the case recently with the NAACP official who denounced those of opposing what is commonly referred to as critical race theory lessons as haters of a long litany of groups from the disabled to children to “help people.” This was followed by the chilling words “Let them die.”

Rather than seek to convince the skeptical, Biden wants to silence them and use these companies to control what is read and discussed about the pandemic. What is chilling is the degree to which reporters and academics have supported the massive censorship system in the United States. However, that system is clearly not (to use Sen. Blumenthal’s words) “robust enough” for Biden who wants these companies to carry out a more complete censorship of opposing views.

I do not fault those who want to convince citizens to take the vaccinations. I have had the vaccinations as has my family. However, this is part of an overall push for greater censorship and speech controls. Governments always claim noble purposes as the basis for limiting speech or other rights. It is the very danger Louis Brandeis once described in his dissenting opinion in Olmstead v. United States, 277 U.S. 438 (1928):

Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government’s purposes are beneficent. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.

  1. Biden is a good man with good intentions but most Americans (of either party) don’t like European style “Nanny States”. Most Americans want government to perform basic services and protect us from other people – not protect us from our own guaranteed constitutional rights and not protect us from our own choices.

If government’s role is to be our nanny-state, why not outlaw riding motorcycles? Skiing? Rock Climbing? For liberals, that would eventually affect pro-choice women, LGBT Americans, etc. and for conservatives that would eventually include hunting or target shooting for gun owners. If us peasants aren’t smart enough to decide, do we trust politicians to make those choices?

Most voters don’t want elected politicians running for the next election making those choices for us. Maybe fix our potholes, roads and bridges.

  2. Fascist insanity. How is this a sane policy? Get vaxxed or else ?

Student Olivia Sandor with Guillain-Barre syndrome, 18, is DENIED admission to BYU-Hawaii and loses $200k scholarship for refusing to get COVID vaccine after doctors said it could worsen her condition.

  3. For those of you who continue to deny that Trump and Republicans are discouraging vaccination for political reasons, your hero said the following over the weekend (from Newsweek):

Former President Donald Trump issued a statement on Sunday claiming that Americans are “refusing” to take the coronavirus vaccine due to mistrust of the Biden administration, the media and the 2020 presidential election results.

“Joe Biden kept talking about how good of a job he’s doing on the distribution of the Vaccine that was developed by Operation Warp Speed or, quite simply, the Trump Administration. He’s not doing well at all,” Trump’s statement said.

“He’s way behind schedule, and people are refusing to take the Vaccine because they don’t trust his Administration, they don’t trust the Election results, and they certainly don’t trust the Fake News, which is refusing to tell the Truth,” the statement added.

Your hero has even more blood on those tiny hands. How you can continue to worship this creature defies logic.

    1. Natch — Why are Blacks the most reluctant to get the vaccine while also being the race least in favor of Ttump?

After what was revealed in “The Plutonium Files” and the Swine flu fiasco, why would folks not hear about experimental government medical programs with a bit of suspicion?

      1. Blacks fear vaccination because of the Tuskeegee experiment, in which black men infected with syphillis were intentionally denied effective treatment so that the natural course of the disease could be studied. After a certain point, syphillis is incurable. The doctors and nurses involved were all black and went along with this outrageous abuse. Ever see the film “Miss Evers Boys”? Then there’s the HeLa immortal cell line–Henrietta Lacks, a black woman (whose white great grandfather owned slaves) presented at Johns Hopkins with advanced cervical cancer. Her tumor was removed and taken to the lab where scientists were able to propagate the cells–something that had previously been impossible. HeLa cells are still used for research on all sorts of things, like cancer drugs, vaccines, etc., and are irreplaceable because results for current drugs can be directly compared to past drugs that were tested using the same cell line. Neither she nor her family members had any idea that her tissue was kept alive until several decades after she died. No consent to use her tissues for research was ever requested. In addition, birth control pills were developed using Puerto Rican women, who were given massively high doses of hormones (compared to modern birth control pills) without being told of the risks or side-effects, which include blood clots and strokes. Blacks view these examples as government-sanctioned abuse based on race. They, too, hear the lies that Trump supporters hear about the vaccine being “experimental”, not approved by the FDA, dangerous side-effects that are worse than the disease, and due to past abuses, they are afraid.

Just this past weekend, your hero took credit for the vaccine and blamed Biden for vaccine hesitancy, claiming that Americans know Biden is not legitimately the POTUS, and that’s why they refuse vaccination.

        1. Natch: “Blacks fear vaccination because of the Tuskeegee experiment, in which black men infected with syphillis were intentionally denied effective treatment so that the natural course of the disease could be studied. After a certain point, syphillis is incurable.”

          ****
You framed this to look worse than it was.

When the Tuskegee experiment began there were no good treatments. That available was Salvarsan, ARSENIC, and also, before that, MERCURY. Both are poisons.

A reasonable medical question, and study, was whether it was safer to poison the patient now or decline to treat the disease and monitor later consequences to see which was better for the patient over the longer term.

Where the study failed ethically was when antibiotics became available and the non-treatment part of the study continued. They should have ended that and given everyone antibiotics.

As government medical studies go, that was minor compared to The Plutonium Files in which unwitting American civilians were given plutonium to see what would happen to them. Since no particular race was selected nobody seems to care, certainly not the black community. That experiment would have gotten several people hanged at Nuremburg.

          1. Any history or facts that is not consistent with Nutacha’s ideology is outside her ability to comprehend.

          2. Thank you for setting the record straight. No one ever mentions “The Plutonium Files”. It’s always about Tuskegee, Tuskegee, Tuskegee.

        2. Nutacha – the Vaccine is approved by the FDA on an expedited and emergency basis.

I actually beleive that is a good thing – and that we should see much more of that.

We could have had a C19 vaccine in July – had the FDA been willing to grant emergency approval with even less rigorous testing – and I beleive we SHOULD have done exactly that.

But we should not pretend that this was NOT an emergency approval or that it received the same extensive testing.

I expect – as we have hundreds of millions of people who are essentially vaccine guinea pigs – including myself, that we will have an excellent understanding of the vaccines actual safety reasonably soon.

We likely have an excellent profile of its SHORT term safety already.

But we can not rule out long term risks yet.

I fully expect we will discover those to be very low – despite some claims otherwise.

BUT – we do not actually KNOW that.

I would further note that you beleive all kinds of malthusian nonsense – why should you be critical of others who are concerned about an unlikely worst case scenario regarding vaccines – when you beleive as certain unlikely scenarios regarding other things – like Global warming.

    2. “He’s way behind schedule, and people are refusing to take the Vaccine because they don’t trust his Administration, they don’t trust the Election results, and they certainly don’t trust the Fake News, which is refusing to tell the Truth,”

      where’s the lie?

the same people who refused to accept the results of 2016 election, blaming Russia Russia Russia and lying about it for 5 years are now lying to us about everything else and censoring dissenting opinions, facts, information from the public.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris sowed doubt and mistrust of the Trump vaccines in the lead up to the election. They have never apologized, or admitted their reckless politiciztion of the vaccines and they owe that to the public, yet they refuse to do so.

      1. Trump supporters are refusing to take the vaccine due to politically -motivated lies spread by alt-right media. Just last weekend, Trump claimed that Americans are refusing to accept the vaccine because Biden is not a legitimate president. Republicans will literally do or say anything to try to derail Biden’s success, including spreading fear and misinformation about the vaccine. Last December, before Trump figured out that he couldn’t lie or bully his way back into the White House, he touted the vaccine as safe and effective, calling it a “Christmas miracle”. He and his family got the shots. He bragged about “Operation Warp Speed”. People were clamoring to get their shot, there were shortages, and a priority system was enacted to inoculate first responders and the elderly and chronically-ill. New COVID cases fell dramatically, as did death rates. Biden set a goal of 70% vaccination of all eligible Americans by July 4th. Republicans just couldn’t let him meet this goal. Biden cannot be allowed to succeed, no matter what it takes, including allowing a dangerous virus mutate and cause more infections by spreading fear about vaccination.

So, after the failed “Stop the Steal” tours, losing dozens of lawsuits, failing to bully state election officials, failing to get Pence lynched to stop the certification of Biden’s victory, and a failed insurrection, now, all of a sudden the vaccine is “questionable”, “experimental”, “worse than COVID itself”, it will “modify your genes”, “it causes blood clots”, ….the list goes on and on, and they are lies. Vaccine administration rates went from 3.5 million to .5 million per day, and the more-virulent Delta variant is now dominant in all states. In the deep South, hospitals are filling up, and there are shortages of nurses, doctors and ventilators. 99% of COVID patients were not vaccinated, and 100% of the deaths are from those who aren’t vaccinated. Trump and the Republicans are responsible for this, and it is not just immoral, it should be criminal. Anything for power. You cannot cite a single, credible federal or state public health official, any local or national medical, nursing or other professional health group that questions the safety or efficacy of the vaccine, or who recommends against vaccination. All of the lies are coming from those who are politically-motivated, and it’s all because Trump can’t handle the fact that he lost the election.

Trump cheated to get into the White House with Russia’s help, and that is not subject to question. Even Dan Coats, longtime Republican and head of American Intelligence said so, under oath. He got fired for telling the truth. And, no amount of claiming by alt-right media that Democrats are lying will change the simple truth that people are dying because of the lies spread by Republicans, Trump and alt-right media, and not based on valid science, but based on politics. You see examples of these lies on Turley’s blog every single day.

        1. “Republicans will literally do or say anything to try to derail Biden’s success, including spreading fear and misinformation about the vaccine”
          ——————-
Exactly what Biden, Kamala, the Dems, and their media, Hollyweird, social media, and all the rest of them did for 4 years under Trump and then twith a vengeance before the November election. Lies, lies, lies and more damn lies.

“Biden cannot be allowed to succeed, no matter what it takes…”
          —————-
Isn’t that exactly what they did to Trump for 5 years?

btw…Did you hear there is a Covid outbreak in the fully vaccinated Biden White House? Yep. Super spreader going on right now IN THE BIDEN WHITE HOUSE but they don’t want to talk about it in the corrupt lying fake news propaganda press….shhhhhhh.

        2. “now, all of a sudden the vaccine is “questionable”, “experimental”, “worse than COVID itself”, it will “modify your genes”, “it causes blood clots”, ….the list goes on and on…”
          ———————
          All of a sudden?

It was the Biden White House that halted the J&J vaccine BECAUSE IT CAUSED BLOOD CLOTS IN WOMEN! And now there is a warning that it not only can cause blood clots in the body, legs, heart, brain, etcetera, but it can also trigger and worsen neurological autoimmune conditions!

Myocarditis, Heart inflammation in young men is a VACCINE ADVERSE EVENT that has been reported in far too many instances and now requires a warning label advisory because it is happening!

The vaccines are not safe and effective for all people. Period.

Why is there an outbreak superspreader going on right now with the Texas fleebaggers? Who spread it to the White House and a member of Pelosi’s staff? All these people have been fully vaccinated.

        3. “and the more-virulent Delta variant is now dominant in all states…”
          ————
It is more contagious and LESS virulent.

And the current vaccine doesn’t seem to provide protection against this variant and may even be the cause of it.

            1. Who is Karen Feldscher? She is a writer. She is not a doctor or a scientist and she writes the way writers do, sometime in an imprudent fashion, when dealing with scientific material.

To you any information that seems to agree with you is good information. Of course that is a belief that should only be held by a young child.

We saw another example of this with the paper you wanted others to read. It was not timely, was written by a student and disagreed with many of the points you made when you posted the paper.

One cannot believe anything that has your name attached.

              SM

            2. “She is correct the delta variant IS MORE virulent.”

You misread the Harvard article. The “and more virulent” refers to Alpha, not to Delta.

All of the experts I’ve read on Delta’s virulence come to the same conclusion: The jury’s still out. And further, that a variant’s virulence can be very difficult to determine.

There’s a good article in “The Atlantic” that covers those issues:

“Why No One Is Sure If Delta Is Deadlier”

              https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2021/06/coronavirus-evolution-virulence/619301/

        4. “99% of COVID patients were not vaccinated, and 100% of the deaths are from those who aren’t vaccinated”
          ——————-

          This is a lie.

            1. “Our grandkids are going to laugh at us and say: “So everyone took medical advice about the coronavirus which came from the Wuhan Virology Lab from the same guy who gave coronavirus grant money to the Wuhan Virology Lab?”

            2. Your source again is Karen Feldscher, a writer, who is neither a doctor or a scientist and needs to use scientific words more carefully.

Svelaz, you need to learn the difference between science and everything else you keep between your ears.

You know how I know public health authorities are lying? Their own data

              by Alex Berenson

“In the last few weeks, politicians and senior public health officials have insisted over and over that unvaccinated Americans account for essentially ALL of the deaths of people from Covid.

At a White House press briefing on July 22, for example, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said that “99.5 percent of Covid deaths and 97 percent of hospitalizations are [emphasis added] among the unvaccinated.”

Note that “are,” please. Are is PRESENT tense, something happening NOW.

              Murthy isn’t alone.

On Independence Day, Dr. Anthony Fauci answered a question on Meet The Press about deaths IN JUNE by saying that “if you look at the number of deaths, 99.2 percent of them are unvaccinated. About 0.8 percent are vaccinated…..”

        5. “Trump and the Republicans are responsible for this, and it is not just immoral, it should be criminal.”
          ——————–
          This is a lie.

Who is in charge now? Who is in the White House? Who controls Congress? Who controls the propaganda media?

Biden, Harris, Pelosi, the Democrat Party are all responsible.

          1. And yes, what Biden, Harris, Pelosi and the Democrat Party, and their media, are doing is criminal and reckless and reprehensible. They will feel the wrath of the voters in 2022. And they know it.

        6. “You cannot cite a single, credible federal or state public health official, any local or national medical, nursing or other professional health group that questions the safety or efficacy of the vaccine,”
          ———————
There are many. And they are all being muted, censored, silenced, delegitmized, and smeared.

        7. “Trump cheated to get into the White House with Russia’s help, and that is not subject to question.”
          ——————–
It has been questioned, investigated thoroughly and debunked.

Biden/Harris didn’t have to “cheat to get into the White House” because the Dem operatives, the corrupt media, social media, and all the rest of the establishment cabal did it for them. It was not a free nor fair election and they all know it.

        8. Oh, and look it up Natacha….

Biden’s approval rating in New Hampshire +1

          Harris’ favorability rating is -17

2022 is gonna be a bloodbath for Democrats.

Couldn’t happen to a worse group of corruptocrat liars.

        9. It is entirely possible that some people may be refusing to take vaccines because of Biden.

Who in there right mind would Trust Biden ?

You did not trust Trump when he pushed hard to get the vaccine as quickly as possible in the first place.

Now it is magically perfect – because Biden is president ?

Why do you expect that others do not share your perspective in reverse ?

Further, why should those people Trust you ?

You have been wrong about most everything – from collusion delusion to pretty much everything about Covid.

The facts did not magically change when Biden was inaugurated.

        10. The vaccine could have been available before the election. And likely would have either changed the outcome – or required even more cheating for the left to win.

That did not occur because Big Pharma and the left and the FDA colluded to delay its announcement.

They scheduled another unnecescary round of testing – when the already competed testing proved everything that we know now.

Personally we should have accepted an even higher level of risk and had the vaccine available in july – and thatr WAS possible, albeit with less testing and therefore higher risk.

The actual vaccine was developed in February 2020. All the time from then until November when it was announced was for two things – to figure out how to produce it by the hundreds of millions and to test for safety.

There is no fundimental difference between the vaccine developed in February 2020 and that given now.

Would you have accepted a potential risk level that MIGHT be 10 times higher in July of 2020 ?

          Many of us would.

And this is PRECISELY why these are decisions that Government should not force on us.

There were biohackers in April claiming to be able to deliver a couple of hundred doses of esentially the current mRNA vaccine for $25,000.

We should have allowed those willing to do so. Maybe they all would have died. Or more likely not and they would have proven immune and we would have learned something.

Risk is NOT the same for each of us – nor is our risk tolerance.

It is always wrong to force these decisions on people.

But those of you on the left do not understand that – because you are willing to force the most trivial things on others.

    3. Are you completely clueless ? Trump did not seek to discourage anyone from getting vaccinated.

He sought to rightfully take credit for the rapid development and approval of the vaccine and contrast that with Biden’s inept handling of pretty much everything.

I would note that issues regarding vaccination do not strictly divide left and right.

Most Trump supporters are behind getting vaccinated – Trump is responsible for its rapid development.
Many on the left are anti-vaxers.

I would further not that independent of politics – whether to vaccinate or not is NOT a trivial issue.

There ARE real risks. The risks associated with the vaccine are lower for MOST people than the risk of death or complications from Covid – but NOT all people.

It is with near certainty unwise for those under 20 to get vaccinated – the under 20 mortality and complication rate for Covid is much lower than the flu. Many under 20 have few mild symptoms. Conversely the risks associated with the vaccine are likely higher for those under 20.

      Some health issues contra-indicate vaccination.

Despite earlier claims the current data suggests that the risk of subsequent infection for those who already had Covid is LOWER than those who are vaccinated, While there is evidence that prior infection AND vaccination result in even lower risk still, the risks associated with the vaccine do NOT justify the tiny gains in immunity for most people.

Nor are these the only factors.

      I have personally been vaccinated.
I do not have any problem with employers requiring vaccination for jobs presuming there are exceptions for those where the vaccine is a serious risk.

But it is idiocy to push for forced vaccination or to pretend that the decision is trivial and that it breaks down on clean ideological lines.

It is also idiocy to suggest that anyone who disagrees with your ill considered and shallow grasp of the real world and its complications is all political.

Every decision in life is NOT political – though many like you try to make it so.

Nor is every decision one size fits all.

I am very happy that Trump was able to deliver the vaccine in record time.

But it is still up to each individual to weigh the factors specific to them and determine whether the risk is worthwhile to them.

That is clearly not political – because the calculus is different for each person. Again something you do not seem to grasp.

I choose to get vaccinated – knowing that this vaccine had NOT gone through the same rigorous testing as prior vaccines.
Also knowing this was a “novell” vaccine – i.e. completely new technology. An approach that was LIKELY to be supperior to prior vaccines, But still UNTESTED – and with risks that were not as of yet known.

Remember Thalidamide. Plenty of things appear to be safe – until we learn they are not.
Nor is everything that is good – Thalidimide has MANY important uses – good for EVERYONE.

We are not equal, We are not the same.

    4. You obviously are blind when reading about anything Trump–just stop doing it. You totally missed the intent of the message. He is simply pointing out the fact that it is highly likely that the people who are not choosing the vaccine are doing so because the government is not trustworthy–have you read anything about the amount of deaths CAUSED by the vaccine? Can you seriously say that people should just blindly do whatever the government tells them to and not be able to make their own informed decision? After all, what many people are seeming to fail to understand is that this vaccine is NOT fully approved for use…it is a temporary emergency approval. Yes, blind are you–the “news” out there is telling everyone that it is safe. This is simply not true. Maybe you should look at your own hands.

    5. Thank God for true leaders like President Donald Trump! Not the hack Biden. You live under a rock.

  4. Apparently under the principles of federalism it IS constitutional to require vaccination.

“ Under guiding principles of federalism, our Constitution preserves the power of the States, within constitutional limits, to adopt laws to provide for public health and safety,” U.S. District Judge Damon R. Leichty, an appointee of Donald Trump, wrote in a lengthy 101-page decision. “Twice the United States Supreme Court has upheld state authority to compel reasonable vaccinations. The States don’t have arbitrary power, but they have discretion to act reasonably in protecting the public’s health.”

  5. Biden is walking back his claim that Facebook is killing people.

His masters in Silicon Valley must have had a word with him– or Jill.

  6. Look at this official photo of Joe Biden, president of the United States attached to the article. Look at his eyes. One eye almost shut. Look at his crooked smile. No one should feel good about this senile-puppet-in-chief. Wake up and pay attention.

  7. Now Amy Klobacher wants to punish big tech for misinformation.

    https://dailycaller.com/2021/07/18/amy-klobuchar-social-media-companies-liable-misinformation

This is no surprise coming from members of a party with totalitarian instincts.

The people on the right who normally would stand strongly against this thinking, the natural friends of open information, have come to despise the big tech operatives who have been abusing them for years.

They seemed to want a totalitarian society, certainly worked toward it, and now they are beginning to get it.

    Welcome to China-West jerks.

Censoring Trump likely will prove to be a big mistake. You put blood in the water for the sharks on the left.

    1. Whether it is braying Jew privilege, and now White privilege, a well documented leftist ideological bent. Take a knee, beg, good girl, boy, whatever.

Meanwhile, the post-apartheid nation of South Africa, with hard coded diversity [dogma] (e.g. racism, sexism, ageism), inequity, and exclusion in its constitution, is following a progressive policy, path, and grade to a Hutu/Tutsi cycle of redistributive and retributive change and dysfunctional convergence.

      1. What is happening in South Africa is a horrific lesson that will never be learned by many.

        But some know.

I was friends with a couple of Indian descent from South Africa. They loved the country and praised it often. Then it was handed over to the blacks. They grew quiet. The praise stopped. They never returned. I think they went to England instead. Smart move because a lot of racial hatred there is aimed at the Indian community that contributes so much talent and wealth to the country. They are having to form local armed militias because the police can’t or won’t stop the violence. Anarchy.

        1. If people would only speak plainly, without emotional appeals, ulterior motives, acknowledge the merits of the case, and, first and foremost, treat each other as individuals (i.e. diversity of individuals, minority of one). The history of Indians in South Africa gives us some insight into the institution of a nominally “apartheid” regime. It’s unfortunate that the Mandela-aligned activists could not be selectively excluded and isolated from the body of people.

        2. Another tragedy in progress. Anarchy is a far-right ideology. But, the totalitarian-anarchist, left-right nexus is leftist. Tread carefully.

      1. Information is power. Worth a listen —–>

        “JULY 07, 2021

LifeSite’s Claire Chretien interviews Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, an upstate New York doctor who has successfully treated many coronavirus patients using safe, effective medicines. Dr. Zelenko unloads on the worldwide reaction to COVID-19, warning the public we are experiencing “the biggest psychological warfare in human history.” Dr. Zelenko discusses vaccine safety, whether the coronavirus vaccines on the market elevate the risk of miscarriage, how many lives could have been saved had governments not acted in tyrannical ways for over a year now, and how lifesaving treatments and information are actively being suppressed and censored.”

        1. Yes, early, safe, inexpensive treatments, closing planned parent/hood, the only corporate venue and practice where there were observable year-over-year excess deaths.

      2. You apparently haven’t grasped the fact that there are unknown, unknowns. Therefore the potential for great harm exists. That is why each person has to judge his risk based on age, health status etc.

        Why are you so inflexible?

      3. I would, if the benefits were greater than the conditional risk of the disease, and there were no viable alternatives.

  8. Examples of the Biden administration contributing to vaccine hesitancy. For example, when fully-vaccinated Biden continues to wear a mask and refuses to shake hands, even when outside, he sends a strong message that he does not believe the vaccine will protect him. CA mandating that everyone has to wear a mask, even the fully vaccinated, makes those considering the vaccine to wonder what’s the point. Then there was Kamala Harris, who said she would not trust the vaccine, which was developed under the Trump administration. I wonder if they will apply their reasoning to their own actions, declare they’ve been “killing people”, and request China and Cuba on the Human Rights Council of the UN to investigate.

Furthermore, polls show that those who are hesitate to get the vaccine do not identify as Republican (61%), while those who have definitely decided against getting the vaccine are a bare majority (55%) Republican or right leaning. It’s pure propaganda to claim that refusal or hesitancy to get vaccinated is a Trump-supporter phenomenon.

““A look at the data reveals that the vaccine hesitant group, however, are not big Trump lovers. They’re actually likely not to be Republican. Instead, many of them are people who are detached from the political process and didn’t vote for either major candidate in 2020,” CNN reported. “The most recent Kaiser poll helps illustrate that the vaccine hesitant group doesn’t really lean Republican. Just 20% of the group called themselves Republican with an additional 19% being independents who leaned Republican. The clear majority (61%) were not Republicans (41% said they were Democrats or Democratic leaning independents and 20% were either pure independents or undesignated).”

Those that have said they won’t get the vaccine, however, are 55% Republican or right-leaning independents. Further, a large percentage of African Americans have also said they are hesitant to get the vaccine, another group that is not known for being Republican.”

    1. I would like to have an accurate fix on the age and health status of vaccine hesitancy. A significant group is hesitant about any vaccine. That group needs to be subtracted from the total numbers. I think the resultant numbers would demonstrate vaccine hesitancy greatest where the known risk to Covid is lowest. The consequent curve would be consistent with a population thinking for themselves.

That would mean that individuals are making decisions based on their personal risk. We already know a very large number won’t take the flu vaccine that has fewer unknowns. Therefore, I think vaccine hesitancy is increased by inconsistent government action and blatant censorship.

If the government truly believes it is in the INDIVIDUAL’s best interests to take the shot, then honesty, not censorship, is the answer.

      1. An MIT study found that Covid skeptics on social media are far from being data illiterate.

Instead some use sophisticated techniques to look at the data. The study showed “that characterizing antimask groups as data-illiterate or not engaging with the data, is empirically false.”

“Jones says the antimask groups’ “idea of science is not listening passively as experts at a place like MIT tell everyone else what to believe.” He adds that this kind of behavior marks a new turn for an old cultural current. “Antimaskers’ use of data literacy reflects deep-seated American values of self-reliance and anti-expertise that date back to the founding of the country, but their online activities push those values into new arenas of public life.”

        1. S. Meyer– This is familiar to you. We were discussing much along the same lines just a day or so ago. This is the approach Feynman would endorse as you noted by linking to Feynman’s talk on what science is.

“Antimasker”, as well as “antivaxxer”, is pejorative social judgment and label spread by antisciencers. Can they abort the baby, cannibalize her profitable parts, sequester her carbon pollutants, and have her, too?

        3. Young, what I consider known is that government statements must contain a considerable amount of error of their own making. Science, in my opinion, requires a certain acceptance of the uncertainty principle based on the idea that if the science is not firm, it requires the use of statistical averages rather than fixed data.

That takes us back to our friend Feynman who talks about what is necessary for the existence of science. Paraphrasing Feynman, science requires the ability to experiment, honesty in reporting results, and the intelligence to interpret the results without letting the intelligence determine the answer ahead of time.

The government might contain intelligence, but it has not been honest and permitted its intelligence to rule over the final possibility. The elite in charge thinks they are the only ones with enough intelligence to sort things out and haven’t learned the basic principles of Feynman and others. In the end, at least for the near present, we can only talk in terms of probability. With the government using only self-selected minds and limiting the numbers of minds, I don’t expect their answers, as to probabilities, to be as exacting as they could be.

We are accustomed to a more open environment where we have more experiments than the few “acceptable ones,” honesty and the ability to obtain probabilities without the biases of politics and governmental assumptions.

            ***
Very true. I liked Feynman’s statement that you may have a beautiful theory but ho matter how beautiful it is, if it doesn’t fit the facts you have to put it aside.

I suspect that given the arthritic rigidity of government organizations there is a tendency to keep a grip on some ‘settled science’ ideas and policies even long after the evidence has shown them to he wrong.

You have seen that tendency here where people argue: “experts say..” as if that settles the issue. Experts often are right, but we are owed an explanation if the facts don’t fit with expert opinion.

In court an expert can offer an opinion as evidence, but he can also be cross examined on his sources, methods and reasoning. It is not uncommon for experts to be embarrassed and simply wrong.

The MIT study showed that some who question the experts now are not the halfwits that had been imagined.

            1. I know that many on this blog are lawyers, as was I for 60 years. Can we all agree that one can always find an “expert” on any subject who will testify, under oath, as to his/her opinions which will always support the position of his/her employers (i.e., counsel)? Unless subjected to cross-examination by experienced and knowledgeable counsel I would never (i.e., never) take any “expert’s” opinion at face value. All of them are biased to some degree. Many are just trained seals. “Arf! Arf!” And that assumes they are really “experts”. I can’t begin to tell you how many have Ph.D’s up the gazoo from Harvard and Yale but know nothing about how the abstract principles they express actually work in the real world.

      2. S. Meyer, I believe you are right. People are making risk/benefit assessments based on their age and state of health. As a healthy, relatively slim 63 year old I elected to get the vaccine though it was a close call. My wife, at 50, did not. We do not want our daughter, who is nine, to get it when it is authorised. The younger and healthier you are, the more the unknown risks of this vaccine weigh against taking it to resist a virus that is very unlikely to harm you even if you get it. This is not irrational or anti-vax.

If the Government wants to persuade the young and healthy that the vaccine is good for them, they need to provide the data that supports the position, in terms of the risks to them of Covid versus the risks and benefits to them of the vaccine, and also explain precisely why it is not yet approved and is available only under emergency use authorisation. I believe the reason for the latter is that there simply is not enough data to prove long term safety or efficacy. Indeed, judging from the VAERs numbers, even short term safety remains a question.

        1. Daniel in addition to our mutual belief about the vaccine, I was taught never to place all one’s money in one place. Additionally one should be careful about those that produce future generations. I took the vaccine based on risk, but at the same time I think our government’s behavior is irrational and dishonest.
